Perform measuring tasks accurately using a range of units (mm, cm, m, km).
Describe the relative size of a km, m, cm, and mm in everyday contexts.
Solve measurement problems by estimating lengths and checking using equipment including perimeters and areas.
Statistics
Pose a question for a statistical investigation e.g. "How wide is a ten year old's hand span?"
Plan an investiagtion.
Carry out a survey a nd record the results.
Make a variety of graphs using data (stem and leaf, dot plot, bar graph, pie graph).
Talk about the special features of a graph (spread of data, outliers, groupings).
Make sensible statements about data.
Discuss and analyse the way data is displayed in the media.
Check out the websites below for fun Statistical activities.
Term 2
Development of number knowledge.
Mental strategies for solving problems using addition and subtraction (continued).

Describe the features of 2D and 3D objects using geometric language.
Describe the features of a circle using: diameter, radius, circumference.
Recognise and identify right angles, horizontal lines, vertical lines, paralled lines.
Create Nets for simple 3D shapes.
Draw plan views of a model made from cubes and make a model from someone else's plan views.
Draw cube models using isometric dot paper and make a cube model from a dot paper drawing.
Solve problems involving cutting shapes and solids.

Term 4
Development of number knowledge.
Mental strategies for solving problems using multiplication and division.
Measurement - temperature, capacity and mass
BASIC FACTS
Learn...learn...learn...one of the most important things you can do to help your own development in Maths is to learn your basic facts. Here is a great way to learn them. Make sure you use the process of seeing(see them written),hearing(say them out aloud as you write them) and actually write them. This will cater for all of your learning styles - visual, auditory and kinesthetic. This means it will be more likely to stay in your long term memory and will save you the hassle of learning them for a long long time.
Remember you can also use your SMARTS to help you learn your facts. If you're group SMART try learning them with another person, if you're nature SMART try connecting the facts to something from nature.
Use the following guide to help you:
Addition and Subtraction
5-10 mins per day - write them out and say them aloud as you do
Learn all the basic facts combinations to 20 e.g. 4 + 5 = 9, 7 + 9 = 16
Learn addition and subtraction facts at the same time - the Families of Facts e.g. learn 5 + 7 =12, 7 + 5 =12, 12 - 7 = 5 and 12 - 5 =7 at the same time by writing out the Family of Facts over and over again (route is best).
Aim for accuracy and speed
Once these have been mastered help them to see patterns e.g. if 7 + 9 =16 then 70 + 90 = 160
Multiplication and Division
5-10 mins per day - write them out and say them aloud as you do
Learn the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x tables first
Once these are mastered learn the 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 11x and 12x tables
Learn multiplication and division facts at the same time - the Families of Facts e.g. learn 6 x 9 = 54, 9 x 6 = 54, 54 / 6 = 9, 54 / 9 = 6 at the same time by writing out the Family of Facts over and over again (route is best)
Aim for accuracy and speed
Once again, when these have been mastered help them to see patterns e.g. if 6 x 9 = 54 then 60 x 90 = 5400
ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
Here are some websites related to solving problems involving addition and subtraction. For the ones marked Learning Objects you will need the username and password given to you in class.
Learning Objects - Decimal Wishball - Test your understanding of decimal place value. Start with a number such as 3.569 that includes thousandths. Spin a random digit, and then choose its decimal place value. Decide whether to add or subtract the random digit from your target number. The starting number will be adjusted by the amount you choose. Work towards a given target number. Great for AM group.
Learning Objects - Mental Problems - using bar and the strategies we are learning in class (number lines) to help you solve these. Great for AA and AM groups.
Statistics involves two main areas - Graphing and Data, and Probability. Here are some great websites to help you practise what you are learning in class related to probability.
Rainforest Maths - click on Year 5 or 6 and then click on 'Chance' or 'Probability'
Geometry involves learning about 2D and 3D shapes, transformations and movements of shapes and objects, and about positions and orientations (e.g. compass points, map readings).
Here are some great websites to use in class and at home to help your develop ideas and build your understanding, skills and knowledge in these areas:
